Every Note Tells A Story

What is better than having your first post be about something that you love? Music. As long as I can remember music has been a HUGE part of my life. A lot of the time it seems like that is all I do. I have a tune running through my head almost 24/7 and when that is not happening then I am making my own music or listening to it out loud on the computer or the radio. I am that one person that is always singing along to the song on the radio and you want to tell to be quiet and change the song. I am also that person that all their electives in school are spent on music credits including Band, Choir, and Orchestra all in the same year. Well sometimes I think to myself why don't you branch out and try something new, but then I think to myself what would I do, music is all I have ever done. Well this week I am devoting 2 hours every morning to getting up and enriching those talents that Heavenly Father has given me. I am going to Summer Jazz Band. This is a totally new experience for me. Sure I have been playing the piano since I was about six years old, and I would say that I am pretty good,
but this is so different. I have had the opportunity to have Mr. Halversen for the past 3 years teach me band. If you have not had him you are missing out.  I have learned so much from him, so many things I cannot even tell you. He has the best sense of humor, and believes that people should have fun when they are learning. And if you want a good pep-talk before a big performance just listen to him before we go on stage. Well just in one day I have learned how much Jazz means to him. A huge part of Jazz is, as Mr. Halversen would say "Don't be married to the Ink." Which for me is hard to do. I want to do what the page says and stick to what is written, but we are being taught to branch out, to try new things, to Improvise. You hear about people who can listen to a song and sit down and play it or make up their own song off the top of their head. I am not one of those people. Give me the sheet music for crying out loud. But this week I am going to try to branch out and try new things and be ok with it.
